In 1911, Clyde Cessna, a farmer from Kansas, built and flew his own aircraft, soaring between the Mississippi River to the east and the Rocky Mountains to the west. Inspired by his personal success, Clyde attempted to operate his own airplane business, but the local bankers didn’t want to lend him any money.
So Clyde moved his venture from Rago to Wichita, Kansas, where he partnered with Victor Roos in 1927 to form the Cessna-Roos Aircraft Company. Roos quickly resigned and sold his half back to Clyde. The Cessna Aircraft Company was born.
Throughout its history, Cessna was one of the highest-volume producers of aircraft in the world, and so it was the target of a few acquisitions, thanks to its value. In 1985, General Dynamics bought the manufacturer, and then sold to Textron, Inc., in 1992.
Cessna’s final landing place is as a subsidiary of Textron Aviation, formed when Textron, Inc. purchased Beechcraft and Hawker. Even today, Cessna remains its own distinct brand and continues to produce quality business jets.
Cessna Citation Business Jets: A Brief History
Cessna’s first business jet, the Cessna Citation I, took its first flight in fall of 1969, and was made available for purchase in 1972. The Citation I was produced until 1985 and was named after an American Triple Crown-winning racehorse.
Since then - and during its tenure - the Citation I inspired many other twin-engine business jets, including the Citation II, Citation III, Citation X, CitationJet, Excel, Sovereign, Mustang, Columbus, Latitude, and the relatively new Longitude and Hemisphere lines. In fact, the Citation line makes up the largest business jet fleet in the world.

Cessna Citation Latitude
This super-midsize jet was made available to the public in 2015 and went on to become one of Cessna’s top sellers before being discontinued in 2020. The Latitude is powered by two Pratt & Whitney PW306D turbofan engines that deliver 5,907 pounds of thrust for up to seven hours or 2,700 nautical miles all at once - that’s from LA to NYC or Geneva to Dubai.
The full-height cabin holds amenities including a private lavatory, interior baggage compartment, and expanded galley to serve up to nine passengers and two crew members. The Garmin G5000 avionics suite boasts a glass cockpit display with widescreen synthetic vision technology, and is easily upgradable to include more features.
Cessna Citation M2
An entry-level light business jet still in production today, the Citation M2 is one of Cessna’s top sellers. The M2 is known for its aluminum airframe, straight wing, T-tail, and forward fuselage with a carry-through section. Two Williams FJ44 engines power the jet to a service ceiling of 41,000 feet and a maximum range of up to 1,550 nautical miles.
The cabin is 4.75 feet tall, 4.8 feet wide, and 11 feet long, with an aft lavatory and forward galley cabinet, suitable for up to seven passengers. The baggage area is external, but the cabin offers plenty of space for laptop bags and other small personal items. The M2 requires only one pilot with its Garmin G3000 flight deck and touch-control avionics, although the cockpit can seat two.

A 25.3-foot long, 5.7 feet high cabin seats eight to 12 passengers. Inside, you’ll find a forward galley, spacious aft lavatory, and multiple internally-accessible closets for luggage. Flying is made simple with a glass-panel Honeywell Primus Epic avionics system and digital engine controls. It was succeeded by the Sovereign+.
Cessna Citation Excel
Launched in 1998 and produced through 2004, the Cessna Citation Excel, also known as the Model 560XL, has one of the most spacious cabins in the midsize class and is an ideal jet for short business trips, up to 1,449 nautical miles.
